Hey, I just made a new piece, I think you will like this one. Dylan @SprouseArts

I’ve been toying around with the idea of how emotions would look translated onto paper lately and though I’ve done some mock ups of a couple, none were quite as defined as this one. I call this one Regret because the look of the face and colors remind me of that. I wanted to make sure i used a very minimal amount of color in this piece as well as a large amount of white, as i think that Regret is almost always accompanied by a bit of emptiness and confusion. I hope you all enjoy it and i’m very much looking forward to your feedback!

  29. Dylan, I hope that this is not a reflection of you! I also agree with you with what follows regret. I love the drawing though. I am drawn to the eyes and keep staring and wondering. What are they thinking, contemplating? REGRET has torn them apart. Removed the heart, where it can’t be broken. Removed the mind, so that you don’t have to be remember it.
This is another AWESOME piece of work by the very talented DYLAN SPROUSE!

  33. Really like this one, Dylan. Great use of color. I don’t know how you’re able to come up with stuff like that. For some reason, I have no imagination when it comes to thinking of what to draw or paint. So here I sit, looking at my ONE painting of sunflowers. LOL.

Anyhoo, look forward to many more from you. Take care.

  39. Very interesting, Dylan. Love the head in hands and the pinky fingers almost pulling down the ends of the eyelids. Nice touch. Now if there were a way to have the various red and blue depictions somehow be in forms that show more distinctly the kind of feelings they depict and perhaps how they might overlap into each other with gray areas. After all confusing feelings almost are like swirling winds of anger, humiliation, worry, guilt and fear of rejection–or like different snakes interweaving, biting, spewing venom and smothering at the same time. I LOVE the idea of depicting feelings!

  45. Once challenged 2 bartenders to make rounds of drinks that represented emotions…worst mix of all was “Sadness”. Didn’t think of “Regret”, but if I were to put that one in a glass & spill it on white paper, I’d expect the result to have more of a “self-betrayal” expression.

  53. Interesting Dylan. I think regret is a difficult emotion to capture in a drawing or painting but I think you have done it. What I think would be interesting to do sometime is to do a drawing/s of faces that you feel convey certain emotions and then ask peope to tell you what emotions are conveyed without telling anyone before hand what emotion/s you intended to convey. With subtle emotions I think you would find a wide range of opinions.

  54. Dennis Laffin on July 25th, 2011 at 8:41 pm
  55. Wow. I’m really impressed. I honestly think this may be your best work since thought of in a dream. The way it’s done, the way everything comes together… it’s just brilliant. I can really get it. I love stuff like this. I feel you captured it well. It’s true art. I’m not just saying that. Honestly, you were good when you first started, but I think you’re really growing and coming along as an artist. I would be interested in seeing more from this series.

  57. This is a really interesting piece. I love how the eyes kinda look sad and tired at the same time. I also find the vein-like lines spreading from them fascinating. And that the eye with the blue one looks just that much more exhausted than the other one.

Very cool piece. And a great idea to capture an emotion like this.

  73. This piece is characterized by 3 things.
This confusion, emptiness, regret. As you wrote.
But the whole thought-provoking art. What did you use on the drawing?
The colors are perfect. You don’t use more color. It is completed. The drawing is really individual design.
It is really very good. Keep it up.

  91. Dylan, thank you for sharing your incredible talent with us. Very interesting piece, the heart is the center of most decisions, usually the ones we ends up regretting and so the big heart being the center of the piece is genius. When we regret, we usually blame ourselves, you know “it was my own doing, my own hands” and so the big hands represent this aspect of regret perfectly. I think the look on his face is more of disappointments than sadness and you’ve captured it beautifully. Fantastic!

I’m all about origonality of peices and nothing ses origional like the one created by the artist with his own to hands, not a printer. hope to hear back from you dylan.

  113. As I might be with a person, I was drawn to the eyes. I find the veins coming from the eyes particularly interesting because they come from the tear ducts, clearly intentional. What do we draw from the lack of nose? Is it inefficient to emotion of regret?
The first thing I noticed (mainly because it loaded top to bottom) was the exposed heart in the brain, as well as the seemingly electric flashes. The flashes seem a more obvious feeling we have felt, but I find the heart in the head a more subtle feeling that I have never thought about.
It seems that as you go from top down, you go from internal to external feelings and responses. Another subtle aspect to this picture is the border, which when looked at directly seems to be just that, a border. However, it adds an eerie aspect of confusion to the feeling, one which can’t be forgotten nor one which is easily portrayed (not that the rest of the feelings of regret are).
    Is this for sale?

  119. This is great Dylan. You definitely put a lot of thought and emotion into it, and it shows. I interpreted this piece as regret forming when the heart thinks in place of the mind, which I agree with. Usually the things we regret the most are the actions we don’t think through. Fantastic job and keep it up!

This piece seems it should belong in that book “falling up” I don’t know if you’ve read it, but that’s where it would fit in.

  199. Dylan, I can honestly say that I love this piece of art. It is probably my favourite out of all of yours! (Although all of them are so very good). I love how the colours also convey what you were trying to show; the red colour shows danger, the dark blue just shows darkness and the scribbles on the surrounding show that he is surrounded by confusion.

I hope Cole will photograph your prints that I have not bought and sign his photos so I will have his autograph and also your prints since no more are available?

  217. It’s similarly like an abstract or is it really an abstract? That’s very vivid! Keep it up Dylan! There’s nothing more relieving when an artist reveals its artworks right? Don’t have time with my artworks lately though I’ve been submitting the artworks that I’ve been making for last year and months before August. Hmm, planning to submit something some other time because I’m just done submitting some today.

You really are a great artist. Never stop drawing. I love looking at your art and insight. It’s always interesting to me. :)

  233. I like this…. this is a great idea!! though when I look at it I almost can see some joy in the face, I think its the upward turn of the corners of the mouth or shape of the eyebrows, almost seems like a partial smile..but you are a talented artist and the idea of “thinking with your heart and not with your brain” (that’s how i translate it) is very true to the emotion you’re trying to portray, sometimes we have regrets that we didn’t listen to logic and instead listen to our hearts because it doesn’t always turn out as hoped. You are a talented artist and hope to see more art like this.

    And it’s always this way.
My head is weak, my heart always speaks,
Before I know what it will say.”

The heart looks like it’s tangled with the brain. Lol anyway, I love the picture! It’s beautiful!

It is really good to draw. We see at once that through your ‘art’ you want to pass on certain message besides this time The regret as you say it, but I find that a suspicion of sadness in its glance is missing. Later it is only my personal opinion(notice), each him(it) his. We are as we are. And even if I am not an expert in art in spite of I like that, you have the good beginning in this domain and more you will continue more you will improve and your weakness shall become then your assets(trump cards). You continue are endowed.

  293. This one is a really good one! You get better everyday!
I love the position of the pupils on the eyes, it make the look that day-dreaming and re-views in his head the bad thing he did(I think that is a bad thing, because he regrets it). Also, the long fingers show that he’s a dreamer and an artist(usually artists have long fingers, because they use them very much at painting, singing at an instrument, writing etc. And every artist, no matter what art does he/she perform, is a dreamer…).
I translate the arteries and heart parts from his head, as the love regrets. As he regrets something he made on the love chapter.
Also his big and almost empty eyes make me think of confusion.
And the colors fit perfectly with everything you draw.
As I see you’re very good at pasting emotions into your drawings. I would like to see a drawing where you try to transmit the fear of something or the disappointment of losing someone/something.

P.S. Sorry for my bad English(I’m from Transylvania, Romania) but I hope that you can understand something. Good luck with your work!

English translation : You have a great stroke of a pen, it’s beautiful, I love art too, I want to do my job and I realized as such masterpieces! We feel good vacuum with white actually, sorry. Its a great thought and it’s very expressive. On top of that the background behind the face and make out for my part I feel stale air resulting in even more alive! I would have liked to know what equipment do you use? Otherwise than that, I say more? It’s beautiful, so I wish you a good continuation for you!

  303. Hey Dylan! Really taking a good look at this for the first time tonight. Looks kinda like a self-portrait, and given the way it’s presented you’re not foreign to the emotions. The coloring does a good job of bringing focus to that area, but I like how it’s not overwhelming. Looks like your head is all over the place, or your heart is fighting your brain for space inside of your twisted head… haha. Always a big fan of your use of shading and attention to details. The wrist area looks like the subject could stand to lose a few lbs… but that’s a whole nuther kind of regret. It’s raw, it’s real, and it’s mental, and probably very telling. Seems like your artwork is kinda like that, which is cool. I don’t expect to see a drawing like this from you in the near future… enjoy school!

Beautiful drawing, very expressive and full of emotion. I love this.

You have talent and I’m waiting your next artwork. If you have time, you are welcome to my website.

  307. Dylan. I have seen this on facebook and I used that link to get here. This is great and I am going to order one of your prints if they are still available. My aunt really liked it when I was visiting with her. I would love to get a written letter from you signed where you can maybe explain your thoughts on each print so it will be very personal but I understand your very busy with college and I hope you master all of your college work and classes! I would like to know which facebook accounts are for you and cole because they are so many and your fans do not understand that you would probably like to have a facebook account for your parents and friends? I wish Facebook would make live video of each celebrity account for you and cole to make a public statement to let you both have your private accounts and then maybe one account for just art fans where facebook could stop all these false accounts. Thank you for your time & God Bless You and Cole!!! Keep up with your art work and Cole Sprouse Photography..

The mind thinks of nothing except of everything within that aches; based upon what’s on this individuals head it fits perfect. Congratulations on your desire to move “away” from acting, don’t give up!

    -One creative individual to another…

P.S. Regret is typically dark (gray & black) while white is associated w/ the defined feeling of “internal psychotic” hence the “white padded walls”. =)

  359. I find it fascinating that this depicts the heart as being in the head, given that so much of human history was spent emphasising the dichotomy between the two.
but who knows, for all we know there may well be a division between the “head” and “heart”, as they’re both complex functions, both reside in the homunculus, and we know pretty much nothing about how that part of the brain works…

  365. Wow. This has to be one of the best drawings depicting a specific emotion that I have seen in quite some time. Just the way you put the heart where the brain was and the emotions that’s illustrated through the eyes… the hands look fantastic as well! This whole drawing is just so well drawn. You can tell you put your time and effort in it. Keep drawing; you have some great talent!

  367. Hi, I fond that site and I stoped here because your are talented but I think you can do better. So what I think you can do? You can read something about semiotics. Semiotica is “art of signs” or “science of signs”. This can help you see the pictures more as meaningfull things.
Some good books are “Semiotics: The Basics” Daniel Chandler – 2007 and “Basics of Semiotics” John Deely

  379. wow Dylan! this is absolutely amazing. this is the kind of stuff i want to draw more of. i just recently got curious as to what you and your brother were up to these days because i hadn’t heard of anything about you since The Suite Life. it’s awesome to see that you two are so artistic, you with video game design and Cole with photography. you and Cole have easily made your way to being two of my favorite celebrities.

  387. i think the way you comprised the piece of art and the use of colour(that’s how we spell it in Britain)and in a way it’s abstract and then in a way it makes perfect sense. You have a GREAT talent Dylan :)
